Origin

Altra Running is an American footwear brand that has focused on promoting a natural running technique since its founding in 2009. The brand originated from dissatisfaction with traditional running shoes and has created a niche with footwear that follows the anatomy of the human foot instead of forcing it into an unnatural shape.

The foundation for Altra was laid in the running specialty store owned by the family of co-founder Golden Harper. Together with Brian Beckstead, he noticed that many runners struggled with injuries due to the high heels and narrow toe boxes of traditional shoes. In an experimental phase, Harper began modifying existing shoes by literally heating the heels in a small toaster oven, carving out the sole, and making it level. The positive feedback from thousands of testers on these "hacked" shoes led to the official launch of Altra Footwear in 2009, a name derived from the Latin word altera, meaning "change" or "other."

Collection

Altra's collection is divided into specific categories for different surfaces. In the trail running segment, the Lone Peak and the Olympus dominate. These are considered the standard for trail runners due to their grip and natural fit. Shoes like the Torin and Escalante are designed for performance on asphalt, with a focus on responsiveness and cushioning. In addition to running and trail running shoes, Altra also offers hiking boots and casual models that provide the same anatomical benefits for everyday use.

Technologies and innovations

Altra distinguishes itself from competitors through three patented technologies found in nearly every model.

FootShape Toe Box

Unlike traditional shoes that taper to a point, Altra offers an extra-wide toe box. This allows the toes to spread naturally, providing more stability and a more powerful toe-off. The philosophy behind this is simple: your foot functions best when it has space.

Zero Drop

Zero Drop technology (often referred to by Altra as Balanced Cushioning) is one of the foundations upon which the brand is built. While almost all traditional running and hiking shoes have a heel that is higher than the forefoot (the so-called 'drop'), Altra returns the foot to its natural, horizontal position. The heel and forefoot are at an equal distance from the ground. This promotes better body alignment and encourages a landing with lower impact on the joints.

It is important to know that those switching from traditional shoes to Altra shoes require an adjustment period. Because the calf muscles and Achilles tendons must work at their full length again, Altra advises building up use gradually to prevent stiffness or injury.

Fit4Her

Altra was a pioneer in designing shoes specifically adapted to the female anatomy, taking into account a narrower heel, a higher instep, and a different arch shape.

Sustainability

As part of the VF Corporation (parent company of brands like The North Face and Vans), Altra has committed to ambitious sustainability goals. By 2030, the brand aims for 100% of the materials used to be regenerative, responsibly sourced, renewable, or recycled. Currently, recycled polyester and recycled materials are already used on a large scale in shoeboxes (85% recycled and 100% recyclable). Additionally, it strives for a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030 (compared to 2018).
