Marmot

Origin

The US brand Marmot originated in 1971, when two University of California students, Eric Reynolds and Dave Huntley, decided to found the Marmot Club. A club for mountaineers. To become a member, you had to climb a mountain peak with another Marmot member. The name ‘Marmot’ was chosen because of the social and curious nature of the marmot animal, a rodent that lives in mountainous areas. Over time, Eric and Dave started making their own parkas and sleeping bags. Then things moved very quickly with the early highlight being Clint Eastwood wearing a Marmot parka in the film ‘The Eiger Sanction’.

Not much later, the company started designing and manufacturing high-quality (down) sleeping bags and clothing for campers and outdoor enthusiasts. Marmot grew quickly and became known for its innovative products, such as the ‘Marmot Down Parka,’ which revolutionised the performance of down insulation. Over the years, Marmot further expanded its product line to include tents, backpacks and accessories for all kinds of outdoor activities. The brand is known for its commitment to quality, durability and technical innovation, making it a favourite choice among adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts worldwide.

Technologies and innovations

NanoPro

NanoPro is a fabric developed by Marmot themselves to keep some of their rainwear breathable, water- and windproof. It contains a membrane developed by them. Marmot states that the fabric has a water column of 10,000 mm and a breathability (MVTR) of 20,000 g/m2/24h, but its actual performance obviously depends on the climate and the other clothing you wear, among other things. NanoPro is mainly used in the brand's lower-cost segment.

Thermal R

Marmot has developed a synthetic insulation material with Thermal R, which they frequently use in their own insulation jacket line. The material is made of polyester. According to Marmot, Thermal R is best described as resilient, highly durable and with an excellent warmth-to-weight ratio. Thermal R Eco is a variant made exclusively from recycled polyester.
